Most books are a selection. Somebody sits with a contact sheet, kills 80 percent, and calls the survivors the story. Posture carries the whole set. Shoulders back, chin level, hands doing small deliberate work instead of decoration. When she looks into the barrel, the frame stops being an image of her and starts being a room you got caught standing in. That's the run of the book: not escalation, just sustained pressure across 514 pages.
